Exciting Youth Arts Opportunity
As part of a year-long programme marking the 70th anniversary of Indian independence and the cultural relationship with the UK, with Internationally renowned arts organisation Kinetika have launched Silk River, an ambitious project which explores the unique relationship between London and Kolkata through artistic exchange between communities along the Thames Estuary and India’s Hooghly River.
Several London boroughs are taking part and in Tower Hamlets, there are still places available on the affiliated Saturday Study Programme which begins on April 29th. This is free of charge and is aimed at young people ages from 12-19 who are interested in Art and Design as well as Drama and Site Specific Performance Art.
Sessions led by ‘A’ Team Arts tutors will look at textile work and will culminate in the creation of striking banners that will be part of a Thames Festival Procession.
Dr Canan Salih is Youth Arts tutor leading on the Site Specific Performance Art aspect of the project to sing songs, tell stories of the people and devise performance as part of the walk all inspired by the rich cultural history of Tower Hamlets Silk trade.
Sarbjit Natt is the Youth Arts tutor leading on the Art and Design project to create a 6 meter banner and 10 smaller flags with images and batik designs that represent the history of Tower Hamlets in respect of manufacturing Silk and other textiles, which is renowned globally for quality, detail and intricacy . It also looks to explore its rich and diverse cultures, faiths and communities by learning about the past to help inform the present and future using the Thames River as our focal point.
It is ideal for students in Years 9 and 10 who are thinking about studying Art, Design, Music, Drama and/or Creative Writing at GCSE, A Level, FE and HE. In addition there is the opportunity to achieve a recognised qualification with the Arts Awards Programme at bronze and silver level.
Session time is 1-3pm and the dates are: April 29th, May 6th,13th, 20th and 27th. There may be additional sessions during half term week which will be arranged with the participants.
